My approach to painting in Krita has evolved significantly over two years, and I want to document the brush settings I've settled on because it took a lot of trial and error.

For linework: the 'Ink-2 Fineliner' brush from the default set, modified with slightly higher pressure sensitivity and a shorter fade. I crank the stabilizer (Krita calls this 'Basic Smoothing') to about 30 for sketch and 60 for final linework.

For blocking in shapes: a large, low-opacity soft brush with spacing set to minimum. I build up color in multiple passes rather than using full opacity. This gives me a painting feel rather than a graphic design feel.

For detailing: I switched to the 'Painterly' brush set from David Revoy's freely available pack. His dry brush variants are exceptional for texture work and have a convincingly organic feel.

Krita's brush engine is the most configurable of any painting app I've used. The learning curve is steep but the ceiling is high. If you're on a budget and willing to invest the setup time, Krita can match Photoshop for painting workflows.
