On why Moonlight (2016) is formally more radical than its awards-season reception acknowledged.

Moonlight won Best Picture at the Academy Awards after a chaotic announcement, which meant the film was processed as a political event — the representation it provided, the industry's belated reckoning with the stories it had failed to tell — rather than as a formal achievement.

The formal achievement is genuinely significant. Barry Jenkins and cinematographer James Laxton developed a visual language for this specific story: the closeness of the camera to the face, the way light sits on dark skin, the color palette calibrated to the geography of Miami's Liberty City. The film looks like nothing else.

The triptych structure — three stages of a life named for different versions of the protagonist's identity — is not just a narrative device. It's an argument about the discontinuity of self: the person you are at eight, at sixteen, at thirty, may share a body but are not the same person. The gaps between the triptych's panels are where the film's most important events occur. We don't see them. We see their aftermath.
