My 5 years journey with Scorsese
What I think about when I think about PTA's use of 70mm and why it's different from Nolan's use of 70mm.
Both directors are advocates for 70mm exhibition and both have made films specifically for that format. But they're using the format for different reasons.
Nolan uses 70mm for scale and resolution — IMAX in particular. His films are formally interested in the monumental: large skies, large machines, large explosions. The format serves the content.
PTA uses 70mm for intimacy. In The Master, the 65mm Panavision frame is most striking in close-up — the human face has a presence in that format that smaller gauges cannot achieve. The grain structure of 65mm negative captured at that proximity creates a texture in the skin that makes the face feel three-dimensional in a way digital cannot replicate.
When Lancaster Dodd leans into frame in The Master, you feel him in the room. That physical presence is what 70mm is doing. It's not panoramic. It's haptic.
