On David Fincher's Zodiac (2007) and why it is his most underrated film.

Zodiac is a procedural about the investigation of the Zodiac killings in California in the late 1960s and 1970s. It runs 157 minutes, is meticulous about factual accuracy, and ends without a resolution — because the case was never solved.

Fincher has made films that are more viscerally satisfying: Fight Club, Se7en, The Social Network. Zodiac is the film where his obsessive need for precision found its most appropriate subject. The film is about obsession, and it is an obsession.

The central figure is not the investigator (Jake Gyllenhaal's Robert Graysmith) but the files. The film is about how an unsolvable case accumulates evidence, produces theories, generates competing interpretations, and eventually outlasts everyone's ability to sustain interest. Graysmith is the last person standing because he is the most obsessive, and the film is finally about the cost of that obsession rather than the value of the investigation.

The visual language is Fincher at his most controlled: the desaturated palette, the precise blocking, the overhead shots that make the narrative feel like a maze. It is also the only Fincher film that allows the investigation to fail, which means it is the only Fincher film that allows the world to be genuinely resistant to human comprehension.
