Math rock and the pleasure of technical difficulty
Bedroom pop production has a specific problem that nobody talks about honestly: the production style can become a way of not finishing things.
When "rough" is the aesthetic, it becomes hard to know when something is done versus when it's just unfinished. The tape hiss and the lo-fi texture can disguise a song that doesn't quite work structurally. I've been in this trap myself — I've "finished" things that were actually just obscured by aesthetic choices that made the incompleteness feel intentional.
The way I try to test for this now is to strip the song down to its barest version — just voice and one instrument — and see if it still holds up. If it does, the production choices are serving the song. If the song falls apart when you remove the texture, the texture is a crutch.
This isn't a value judgment about lo-fi as an aesthetic — it's a diagnostic question about whether a specific song is actually finished.
