How Bandcamp Fridays changed my listening habits
Shoegaze gear rabbit hole: I want to talk about the pedal chain and why signal flow matters more than the individual pedals.
The classic mistake is buying expensive reverb and distortion pedals and then stacking them in the wrong order. Distortion into reverb gives you a lush, sustained wall of sound. Reverb into distortion gives you a harsh, aliased mess. The order of operations in a shoegaze rig is not arbitrary — it's compositional.
The second mistake is thinking that the pedals are the point. The guitar matters more. A semi-hollow body guitar with single-coil pickups will respond to heavy reverb and gain completely differently than a solid body with humbuckers. The Cocteau Twins and MBV sounds are partly about the specific interaction between the guitars they were using and the effects chain, not just the effects in isolation.
I've been working on a rig for the last year and the most important single change I made was switching the guitar, not any of the pedals. Anyone else go down this rabbit hole?
