Vocal performance in lo-fi records often includes elements that would be edited out of clean productions: room resonance, slight pitch variations, the specific quality of a voice recorded in a non-ideal acoustic environment. These elements create a sense of the vocalist as a physical presence in a specific space rather than a processed vocal representation.

The question is whether this physical specificity serves the music. For certain kinds of lyrical content — the confessional, the personal, the uncertain — the physical presence of an unprocessed vocal in a real room adds information that clean production removes. The imperfection is evidence of realness.

For other kinds of content, the lo-fi vocal treatment can work against the music. Content that requires a certain kind of authority or polish in the delivery will not benefit from the vulnerability that lo-fi vocals communicate.
