Post-punk and the feminist dimension of its history is something that mainstream music writing has been slow to engage with seriously.

Some of the most important artists in the post-punk tradition were women and femme artists making music that engaged explicitly with gender and power. Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Slits, Marine Girls, the Au Pairs — these are not peripheral figures in the tradition; they're central to its development and most interesting moments.

The critical framing of post-punk as primarily about Joy Division and Gang of Four and Wire has produced an account of the genre that de-centers the work that was arguably doing the most interesting things with the tradition's possibilities. The feminist artists were using the post-punk toolkit for different ends, and those ends were more directly political and more structurally innovative than a lot of what gets celebrated in the canonical account.

If you've been listening to post-punk primarily through the canonical male-centered narrative, there's a whole other layer of the genre's history that's worth finding.
