I want to make the case that bedroom pop became the dominant aesthetic of a generation for reasons that are more interesting than just democratized recording tools.

Yes, cheap DAWs and microphones made home recording accessible to everyone. But that's a necessary condition, not a sufficient one. The aesthetic choices that define bedroom pop — the lo-fi texture, the intimate scale, the deliberate imperfection — are responses to a specific cultural moment, not just a byproduct of limited resources.

Bedroom pop emerged as an aesthetic at the same time that a generation was experiencing accelerating public pressure and a shrinking of private space. The bedroom as a creative sanctuary isn't just about access to recording equipment; it's about the bedroom as one of the few spaces that still belongs entirely to you. The music that comes from that space sounds the way it does partly because of what it's resisting.

I don't think every bedroom pop artist is consciously making this argument. But the aesthetic has emotional resonance that goes beyond lo-fi production choices.
