Shoegaze and mental health: the therapeutic angle

Indie labels and the question of artist development is something that distinguishes the great labels from the merely competent in a way that only becomes clear over time.

The standard model for an indie label release is: sign an artist who's already made something interesting, release the record, do what you can with limited resources to get it heard. There's nothing wrong with this model, but it's essentially reactive — the label is responding to art that already exists rather than participating in its creation.

The labels that have had the most enduring influence on the culture are the ones that treated artist development as a serious long-term project. This means signing artists before they've made their best work, giving them the resources and time to develop, and being willing to release records that don't immediately find their audience. 4AD in the 80s, Sub Pop in the 90s, certain labels in the current landscape.

The economic model that makes this possible is fragile — it requires labels to maintain catalog revenue while investing in uncertain futures. Most labels can't sustain it. The ones that can are the ones that shape how music sounds for a generation.
