Small venue sound is underrated and I want to defend it.

The acoustic physics of a small room with a low ceiling and wood floors are actually ideal for certain kinds of music. Shoegaze that would be overwhelming in an arena becomes immersive in a 200-cap room. Post-punk that needs to feel angular and immediate lands differently in a space where you can see the bassist's expression. The PA limitations at small venues force a certain restraint in the mix that actually improves some music.

The thing you get at small venues that you can't get anywhere else is the sense of the room responding to the sound as a physical object. The walls do something. The floor does something. When a band finds the resonant frequency of a small room, it feels like the whole building is playing along.

I've seen the same band in a small venue and a medium venue in the same tour cycle and the small venue show was categorically different, not just louder or quieter.
