I want to make a case for folk-punk as one of the most vital genres in independent music and the one that gets the least mainstream critical attention.

The genre has a direct through-line from the protest song tradition — Woody Guthrie through Phil Ochs through the early Clash through Pogues through Against Me! and into a current crop of artists that are as good as anything in the lineage. The DIY ethics aren't just an aesthetic choice; they're structural to how the music exists and distributes. Folk-punk artists almost universally sell their own records at shows, do their own booking, and maintain direct relationships with fans in a way that feels genuinely different from the indie label model.

The acoustic-electric tension in folk-punk is more interesting than it gets credit for too. When an Against Me! song works, it works because the melody is strong enough to carry equal emotional weight on acoustic guitar and through a distorted amp. That's a harder compositional challenge than it looks.
