Indie music and the problem of the sophomore slump from a structural rather than talent perspective.

The sophomore slump is real but it's usually described as a talent problem — the artist had great ideas on the debut and ran out of them on the follow-up. I think this is usually wrong. The more common cause is a structural problem: the debut was made over years of development, under no commercial pressure, with no awareness of a potential audience. The follow-up is made in months, under significant commercial and critical pressure, with full awareness that people are watching.

These are fundamentally different creative conditions, and most artists don't have the stability to produce equivalent work in both conditions. The debut's authenticity often comes from the fact that it wasn't made for anyone. The follow-up is almost always made for someone, even if the artist is trying to ignore the audience.

The artists who navigate this transition well are usually the ones who either had the structural support to take enough time, or who had developed enough clarity about their own creative process that the external pressure didn't displace it.
