Lo-fi home recording and the gear that actually matters versus the gear that the internet tells you matters are two very different lists.

The internet tells you to upgrade your interface, your microphone, your preamps. This is not useless advice, but it will not solve the actual problems of home recording. The actual problems of home recording are almost always acoustic — the room you're recording in is creating problems that no amount of preamp upgrade can fix.

The gear that actually matters for home recording in order of impact: acoustic treatment (cheap, high impact), microphone positioning knowledge (free, very high impact), gain staging discipline (free, eliminates a major noise class), decent headphones for tracking (moderate cost, clear impact).

I spent three years and a significant amount of money on preamp and microphone upgrades before someone walked me through proper microphone placement and gain staging. The improvements from learning those two things, which cost nothing, exceeded the improvements from all the gear purchases combined.
