Vinyl collecting and the philosophy of what to keep versus what to let go is something I've been working through.

I have about 400 records and I've started thinking about the collection as something that should be alive rather than static. Every record I keep is a record I can't replace with something I'm more excited about, given limited budget and limited space. The completist impulse — keeping everything because it might be important someday — is actually a way of not making curatorial decisions.

The records I've decided to cull are the ones where I can articulate exactly why I liked them but can't remember the last time I played them. That's the sign of a record that was interesting as an object of analysis but isn't serving any emotional or aesthetic function in my life anymore.

The records I'll never sell are the ones where I can't quite articulate why they matter — the ones where the explanation falls short of the feeling.
