Memory doesn't preserve the past clearly; it filters and blurs and sustains certain elements while losing others. The acoustic properties of shoegaze production replicate some aspects of how remembered experience actually sounds.

This is probably not a fully conscious intention in most shoegaze, but it might be part of why the genre resonates so strongly with a specific kind of nostalgic or elegiac feeling. The music sounds like how the past sounds in memory — present but at a distance, clear in some qualities and obscured in others.

The best shoegaze records feel like memories of things that may not have happened. They have the quality of a remembered experience — the emotional weight is there, but the specifics are uncertain.
