Math rock and the recording production choices that capture the genre best are more specific than they might seem.
The technical challenge of recording math rock is capturing the rhythmic precision without making it feel metronomic. The music needs to feel physically exact — the odd meter has to lock in, the unison riffs have to be genuinely unison — but it also needs to breathe and move the way music played by humans moves. Too much quantization and it sounds like a click-track demo; too little and the precision that defines the genre disappears.
The approach I've heard described by engineers who specialize in this kind of material is to record live as much as possible, capture the timing feel of the actual performances, and do minimal correction rather than extensive grid-locking. The goal is to preserve the micro-timing variations that make live music feel alive while ensuring the macro-timing is clean enough that the complex meters register.
The drum sound in math rock also matters enormously — the clarity of each drum element is essential because the polyrhythmic relationships between kick, snare, and hi-hat are compositional rather than just time-keeping.
