Shoegaze and the live sound problem is real and I want to talk about why it's interesting rather than just complaining about it.

The fundamental issue is that shoegaze is a studio genre in a deeper sense than most rock music. My Bloody Valentine spent years building the production approach that defined Loveless, and a lot of what makes that record work is not reproducible in live performance without a very specific infrastructure. The live shows where shoegaze bands successfully capture the studio sound are the ones with huge PA budgets and extended soundcheck time.

What's interesting is what happens when bands lean into the live difference rather than trying to replicate the studio. The live shoegaze that I've found most compelling is the kind where the band lets the performance be more improvised and more physical than the studio version — the wall of sound is genuinely built in the room rather than recreated from a reference recording.
