Dream pop and the influence of film music is something that doesn't get discussed enough in the context of the genre.

A lot of dream pop production borrows from the film score tradition in ways that are more structural than just atmospheric. The use of strings as texture rather than lead, the approach to dynamics as narrative arc, the way certain productions treat the whole record as a kind of continuous score — these are film music techniques applied to song-based pop.

The connection makes intuitive sense. Both film scoring and dream pop are primarily concerned with creating an emotional environment rather than delivering information. Both use production as a compositional tool rather than just a delivery mechanism. The difference is that dream pop has to create the imagery internally — it can't rely on a screen.

I'd argue the best dream pop records work like films without images: they create a visual and spatial world purely through sound.
