Hot take: Spotify isn't as good as people say

Dream pop and the question of what constitutes too much of a good thing is something I think about with records that are primarily beautiful.

Beauty in music can be excessive in a way that becomes numbing. A record that is relentlessly lush and gorgeous and atmospheric for 45 minutes can produce a satiation that works against continued engagement. You can become aesthetically full before the record has finished what it was trying to say.

The dream pop records that I find most durable are the ones that use discomfort or friction as part of the structure. A moment of genuine strangeness in an otherwise gorgeous production, a lyric that cuts through the atmospheric haze, a rhythmic disruption that makes you suddenly present in a way the surrounding music wasn't requiring — these elements create the variation that makes the beauty land harder.

The completely frictionless dream pop record is often the least interesting one. Beauty needs something to define it against, and the records that understand this are the ones that reward extended engagement.
