Dream pop and the use of space as a compositional element is something the genre handles better than almost any other popular music tradition.

The classic rock approach to space — the dramatic breakdown before the final chorus, the solo as punctuation — is relatively conventional. Dream pop uses space differently: silence, near-silence, or the extended sustain of a held note create duration itself as a compositional element. You're experiencing time passing as a musical event.

The Cocteau Twins, at their best, do this constantly — the spaces between phrases are as composed as the phrases themselves. The reverb tails that carry notes forward into silence maintain the presence of something that has technically already ended. The music continues to happen in the time after the last note.

This approach requires listener trust. You have to be willing to stay in a moment of near-silence and believe the music hasn't ended. The reward is a sense of the music as a continuous presence rather than a sequence of events.
