Math rock is the most inaccessible-seeming genre that becomes completely intuitive once something clicks for you. I want to talk about that click moment.

For me it happened with a Don Caballero record. I'd tried math rock a few times before and it felt like music for people who wanted to do homework while listening — impressive but cold. Then someone put on Don Caballero in a car on a long drive and somewhere around the third track something in my brain locked onto the odd meter and it stopped feeling like puzzle-solving and started feeling like breathing.

The thing that changes when math rock clicks is that you stop tracking the "correct" beat and start feeling the rhythmic cycle as the unit. A 7/8 pattern doesn't feel like a bar of 7 anymore; it feels like one breath. That's when the music stops being cerebral and starts being physical.
