I want to share the credit score improvement story I wish had existed when I needed it.
In 2019 my score was 541. Missed payments on a personal loan during a rough patch, plus 87% utilization across three credit cards.
What I did over 24 months:
- Set up autopay on every account to prevent any more missed payments going forward.
- Called the creditor on the missed payment and negotiated a goodwill deletion — it worked once out of three attempts.
- Aggressively paid down credit card balances starting with the card closest to its limit.
- Did not close any old accounts.
- Did not open any new accounts for 18 months.
Today my score is 768. The two factors that moved it most: payment history normalizing over time, and utilization dropping from 87% to under 8%.
Time heals most credit wounds. The behaviors that accelerate it are not complicated.
