My salary negotiation script that works every time

I want to share the salary negotiation script I've used successfully three times.

When they ask for your salary expectations: 'I've done some research on the market rate for this role and this geography, and I'm looking for something in the range of X to Y. Can you share what the budgeted range is for this position?'

When they offer below your range: 'Thank you for the offer — I'm very excited about this role. Based on my research and the scope of what we discussed, I was hoping to be closer to X. Is there flexibility there?'

When they say the range is fixed: 'I understand. Is there flexibility in other areas — signing bonus, remote work schedule, equity, or review timeline?'

Silence is your most powerful tool. After you make an ask, stop talking. Let them respond. The discomfort of silence often works in your favor.
