Terraforming Mars: standard map vs Hellas vs Elysium
Pinned in Board Games DealsWingspan took me completely by surprise. I expected a pretty game about birds that would be fine for casual nights and nothing more. What I found instead was a deeply interlocking engine that rewards attention to synergies rather than just accumulating the highest-value cards. The activation chain mechanic is so elegant that I spent my first three games just marveling at how it felt rather than winning.
The European expansion adds winter as a season and introduces the tuck and cache mechanics to a much greater degree. Winter becomes a scoring engine in ways that change how you draft birds throughout the game. I consider it essential. Oceania is similarly excellent — the nectar mechanic adds a shared economy that makes player interaction feel more present without adding direct conflict.
Component quality is exceptional. The bird cards are some of the most beautiful in modern gaming. The egg tokens, the food dice tower, the bird tray — Stonemaier clearly cared. If you own the Nesting Box, the storage solution is genuinely among the best produced for any game.
