What's the deal with push-up?

The Parallel Bar L-Sit: Building the Foundation

The L-sit on parallel bars (or parallettes) is a fundamentally different exercise from the floor L-sit, and it's the version that should be trained first and most. Here's why.

On the floor, your hands press into the floor below your hips. The clearance between the floor and your body is limited by your hand height (essentially zero). For a proper L-sit, your hips need to be above the surface — which is mechanically difficult on the floor without extremely strong wrists allowing fist push-up position.

On parallettes, the handles are elevated. Your hips can clear the surface with normal wrist extension. The hip flexors and compression muscles can actually work through their full range. This is why the floor L-sit is harder than it looks and why beginners often get discouraged when they should be training on parallettes.

Build the L-sit here: 3 sets of max holds with straight legs and pointed toes. When straight leg holds are solid (15+ seconds), begin transitioning to floor practice. The strength will carry over.
