pull-up: expectations vs reality

The Pull-Up Dead Hang: Building Shoulder Health

The dead hang — simply hanging from the bar at full arm extension — is one of the best shoulder health exercises available and one of the most systematically neglected.

What it does: decompresses the shoulder joint, builds passive shoulder flexibility in overhead elevation, develops grip endurance, and builds the shoulder stabilizer endurance needed for safe hanging work.

The technique: full arm extension, shoulder blades in neutral or slightly elevated, feet can be together or crossed. The passive hang allows gravity to decompress the shoulder. Gradually the range will increase as the shoulder capsule and surrounding tissue adapts.

Progression: build to 60 seconds of dead hang. This is a meaningful baseline for shoulder health and grip capacity. Beyond 60 seconds, add weight or progress to single-arm variations.

The inverted hang (hanging with your back toward the bar, from behind): combines the dead hang shoulder health benefits with a passive stretch in the shoulder extension range that skin the cat requires. Both hanging variations should be in every training routine.
