Beginner's guide to planche?

Calisthenics and Yoga: A Productive Combination

I've been combining calisthenics with a yoga practice for two years and the synergy is real. Here's what transfers in each direction.

From yoga to calisthenics: hip flexibility (forward folds, pigeon pose, lizard pose) directly improves L-sit range and pistol squat depth. Thoracic extension work from yoga (wheel pose, camel) helps handstand alignment. The breathing practice from yoga carries into skill training — controlled breath during holds is underrated.

From calisthenics to yoga: the strength I've built in ring and planche training makes arm balances much more accessible. Crow pose, scale pose, and firefly are genuinely easier when you have planche-specific shoulder and wrist strength.

The philosophical overlap is also real — both practices reward patience, consistency, and attention to quality over quantity. Training three times a week in each, with sessions alternating, is sustainable and progressive.
