The pseudo planche push-up: how to make push-ups harder without a bar

Muscle-Up Technique: The Transition Phase Breakdown

Everyone knows the muscle-up is hard. What most people don't realize until they're training it is that it's the 3-inch transition between the pull and the push that's the entire challenge. Here's what's happening and how to train it.

The transition requires you to move your center of gravity from below the bar to above the bar while changing your grip from a pulling position to a pushing position. On rings, this is easier because the rings rotate. On a bar, the wrists must bend backward aggressively — this is why false grip matters.

The blocking point: most people pull to chest height and then stall. This means their pull isn't generating enough momentum to carry through the transition. The top of the pull needs to be explosive and high — aim for the bar at your lower chest or even your stomach.

Drills: explosive chest-to-bar pull-ups build the momentum. Muscle-up negatives from above the bar (lower from locked-out position back through the transition) build the transition-specific strength. Bar muscle-up on a low bar where feet touch provides the assist needed to practice the transition pattern.
