Understanding Wrist Extension Flexibility

Wrist extension — bending the hand back toward the forearm — is required for floor push-up variations and planche work. Most people begin with insufficient range or tissue tolerance. Here's the complete conditioning approach.

Range requirements: for comfortable floor push work, approximately 90 degrees of wrist extension (palm flat on the floor with fingers forward) is the minimum. For planche leans at aggressive angles, you need comfortable loading at 90+ degrees.

Flexibility vs tissue tolerance: flexibility (the range is available) and tissue tolerance (loading that range comfortably) are separate qualities. Many people have the range passively but lack the tendon and ligament conditioning to load it. Both need development.

Conditioning protocol: quadruped weight shifts (on all fours, shift forward, backward, and in circles), fist push-ups (builds strength that unloads the wrist extension position indirectly), and progressive loading in the wrist extension position starting with light hand placement and gradually adding load over weeks.

Timeline: 3-6 months of daily wrist prep brings most people to comfortable floor push-up loading. The planche-specific angles take longer — 6-12 months of progressive conditioning.
