Capoeira and calisthenics: why I started combining both

Announcement

Calisthenics Outdoors in Winter

I train outdoors year-round. Minus ten Celsius is not a comfortable training environment but it's a trainable one. Here's how I adapt.

Warm-up doubles. My standard 13-minute warm-up becomes 25 minutes in cold weather. The muscles and joints simply don't respond the same way to movement until temperature has been built up. Rushing this is how cold-weather injuries happen.

Layers I wear: a base layer that wicks sweat, a mid layer for warmth, and a windproof outer layer I can remove once warm. Gloves are mandatory — cold hands affect grip significantly. I switch to thin gloves once warm-up is complete.

Skill work degrades in the cold. My handstand balance is worse in cold weather — the neural precision requires warm tissue. I accept this and use cold sessions for conditioning and volume work rather than skill refinement.

Cover your joints. Knee sleeves and wrist wraps in cold weather add warmth to the joints that are most vulnerable to cold-induced stiffness. This is not just psychological — joint fluid viscosity changes with temperature.
