Rest Periods Between Sets: What the Research Says
Rest periods between sets affect training outcomes in ways that most calisthenics athletes don't optimize. Here's what the evidence supports.
For strength training (low reps, high intensity): longer rest is better. 3-5 minutes between sets allows full neurological recovery and allows the next set to be performed at maximum quality. Shortening rest to 60-90 seconds in this context reduces the quality of subsequent sets and, over time, reduces the strength stimulus.
For hypertrophy (moderate reps): 90-120 seconds is the typical recommendation. Shorter than strength work, longer than endurance work. The accumulated metabolic stress from shorter rest may contribute to hypertrophy signaling.
For skill work: full recovery between attempts is important. Skills are neural and fatigue degrades the quality of neural patterns. Rest until you feel ready to perform the skill with high quality — typically 3-5 minutes for demanding skills.
For endurance/conditioning: shorter rest is the training stimulus. Circuit-style training with 30-60 seconds rest builds work capacity by forcing adaptation to incomplete recovery.
