Is Procreate worth getting into in 2025?
I want to discuss the experience of taking on a large project — a graphic novel, an illustrated book, or a long series — as a digital artist who has primarily done standalone pieces.
The planning problem: a 200-page graphic novel is not forty-eight standalone illustrations. It's a visual system that needs to be consistent across all 200 pages, maintain narrative continuity, and manage visual pacing for a reading experience.
What I didn't anticipate in my first large project: consistency debt. Every visual decision I made in the first chapter became a constraint in all subsequent chapters. The character's hair color, the lighting direction in the recurring interior, the rendering style for crowd scenes — all of these needed to be right from the start because changing them mid-project meant retroactive fixes.
The planning solution: before drawing any final pages, I spent two weeks building the visual system. Character sheets, environment sheets, palette sheets, and a sample scene rendered to the level of finish the final pages would use. This upfront investment paid back many times over.
