Advanced Pull-Up Programming

Once you can reliably do 10+ pull-ups, standard beginner programming stops being sufficient. Here's how intermediate and advanced pull-up training works.

Priority 1: increase top-end single-rep quality. Strict form, full range, controlled throughout. If your 10-rep pull-up involves swing, body English, or incomplete range, fixing this is your first step.

Priority 2: add weighted work. Dip belt with added plates, 3x5 at a challenging weight, is the fastest way to build pulling strength. Start at 5-10 kg depending on your baseline. Add 2.5 kg when you can consistently complete the sets with clean form.

Priority 3: variation work. Chest-to-bar pull-ups, L-sit pull-ups, and archer pull-ups each develop a slightly different pulling pattern and address gaps in the standard pull-up.

Priority 4: volume accumulation. Multiple sets of submaximal reps (6-7 reps when max is 10) builds the volume tolerance needed for high-frequency training. This is what greasing the groove is doing, formalized.

Don't neglect scapular retraction at the top of each rep. 'Pull the bar to your chest' and 'retract at the top' are cues that improve pull-up quality and transfer to muscle-up training.
